Each day’s hike ranges from 12 to 15 kilometers. DAY 1
Suzie’s Cottage to Sink Shack (15km)

Elevation gain: 400m up – 350m down
Starting from the Kouga Wilderness, the first day’s hike takes you across Ysterhout Plaas, named for the abundance of Sand Olive (Dodonaea viscosa) that blankets its grounds. As you ascend the foothills of the Kouga Mountains, you’ll be greeted by spectacular fynbos and sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. The hike then leads you down to the Kouga River, where you’ll enjoy lunch and a refreshing swim.

DAY 2
Sink Shack to Semane Lodge (12km)

Elevation gain: 500m up – 600m down
Setting off with another early morning climb, you’ll head up to Suikerbossie Cottage, from where you can enjoy vistas of endless mountains. Dropping down to the Kouga River, the trail meanders along its bird-rich banks before climbing out to enjoy the sunset, eventually dropping down to Semane Lodge.

DAY 3  
Semane Lodge to Bergkamp (13km)

Elevation gain: 700m up – 300m down
The penultimate day of the Kouga Camino leads you deeper into the wild untouched beauty of the Kouga Mountains. This section of the trail provides some stunning panoramic views of the mountain range. As you climb in altitude, you’ll pass through a variety of biodiversity, from the Kouga Valley forest through diverse fynbos, culminating with some subalpine fynbos. The day’s journey ends by descending past a healthy colony of cycads (Encephalartos longifolius). Enjoy a hot shower and a big bonfire under an unparalleled view of the starry night sky.

DAY 4
Bergkamp to Kouga Wilderness (12km)

Elevation gain: 150m up – 350m down
The final day of the Kouga Camino takes you on a descent through diverse subtropical forests. Meandering along the valley floor under a canopy of trees, you’ll encounter crystal-clear pools perfect for a refreshing dip. The trail takes you through a cycad forest, where jagged cliffs hug you from both sides, and the only sounds you’ll hear are rustling leaves and bird calls. Overnight at a rustic wooden cabin nestled in the woods, offering a peaceful retreat.
